Parametric Geometry Models for Hypersonic Aircraft: Integrated External Inlet Compression
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper we are investigating a method for the design and integration of 3D external compression inlet geometries on parametric geometries of air-breathing hypersonic aircraft. We view the geometries as the first stage of a mixed compression inlet. The investigations are based on waverider geometries generated with the osculating cones waverider forebody design method. The osculating cones method is further utilized to create a second compression surface before the inlet cowl, essentially creating a second waverider geometry on the underside of the forebody. This way, we achieve greater compression for the part of the flow to be captured by the inlet cowl using a geometry that does not require sidewalls (like 2D ramps do), and has a potentially larger capture area than axisymmetric inlet geometries such as half-cones. The integration method is explained in detail, validated and further examined with CFD simulations. Those include measurements of the sensitivity of the flowfield to angle of attack, sideslip and Mach number changes. A number of options for designing the downstream internal compression part of the inlet are also discussed.

Thrust Augmentation by Airframe-Integrated Linear-Spike Nozzle Concept for High-Speed Aircraft
The airframe-integrated linear-spike nozzle concept applied to an external nozzle for high-speed aircraft was evaluated with regard to the thrust augmentation capability and the trim balance. The main focus was on the vehicle aftbody. The baseline airframe geometry was first premised to be a hypersonic waverider design. The baseline aftbody case had an external nozzle comprised of a simple dive...

Fully reusable spaceplanes do not exist as yet. This implies that design-qualification for optimized highly-integrated forebody-inlet configuration of booster-stage vehicle cannot be based on archival data of other spaceplanes. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel TIPSO-SVM expert system methodology. A non-trivial problem related to optimization and classification of hypersonic forebody-inlet...

This paper summarizes the results of investigations into the development of parametric waverider geometry models, with emphasis on their efficiency, in terms of their ability to cover a large feasible design space with a sufficiently small number of design variables to avoid the ‘curse of dimensionality’. The work presented here is focused on the parameterization of idealized waverider forebody...

Hypersonic airbreathing propulsion for access to space has several advantages over conventional rockets. However, to achieve the theoretical propulsion efficiencies, many technological challenges, such as fast and efficient mixing of the fuel with air, still need to be resolved. Several scramjet inlet geometries naturally generate vortices that could be used for mixing enhancement. Thorough cha...
